The VPN/Proxy Detector on 101IP identifies the connection type of any IP address: VPN, public proxy, TOR, datacenter, or regular residential ISP. Detection is performed using the ip-api database with proxy, hosting, and mobile flags.

Connection types

• Proxy / VPN — IP belongs to a VPN provider (NordVPN, ExpressVPN etc.), public proxy, or TOR exit node;
• Datacenter / Hosting — IP is leased from a cloud provider (AWS, Azure, Hetzner etc.) or hosting company;
• Mobile carrier — IP is used in a mobile network (shared among many users, frequently changing);
• Residential connection — regular IP from a home or corporate ISP.

When you need this check

• Verify that your VPN is actually hiding your real IP;
• Check a new client or user IP for anonymizer usage;
• Determine whether traffic from an IP is datacenter bot traffic;
• Analyze suspicious IPs found in web server logs.

Data is provided by ip-api.com. Accuracy of VPN/proxy detection depends on the database freshness; some newer VPN servers may not be flagged as proxies.

• Why does my IP address show a different location than where I actually am?

  This is normal if your internet provider uses shared IP addresses or CGNAT technology. The database may show the location of the provider's central node or data center. If you are not using a VPN, try checking on a different device or network to see if the result changes.

• How can I hide my real location when using the site?
