An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is the standardized bank account format used across Europe and dozens of other countries, mainly for SEPA transfers. This free validator checks the format, the expected length for the country code, and the MOD-97-10 checksum defined by ISO 13616 โ instantly, entirely in your browser.
The first 4 characters (country code and check digits) are moved to the end of the string, letters are converted to numbers (A=10 ... Z=35), and the resulting number is divided by 97 digit by digit. A remainder of 1 means the checksum is valid. This catches most typos instantly, without contacting any bank.
It checks the format, the length for the given country, and the MOD-97-10 checksum (ISO/IEC 7064) used by the IBAN standard. It does NOT verify that the account actually exists or is open at the stated bank โ only a bank's internal systems can confirm that.
Each country's central bank defines its own BBAN structure, and the resulting IBAN length is fixed in the SWIFT/IBAN Registry. Norway has the shortest IBAN at 15 characters, while Malta has one of the longest at 31.
